2018 Alumni Recognition Award Winners

Philip Broome, B.A. '10 & M.M. '12
Distinguished Alumnus in Military/Public Service
Staff Sergeant Philip Broome has served in the euphonium section of the West Point Band, the nation's oldest Army Premier Band since 2012. Philip is an official Yamaha Performing Artist and Clinician and adjunct professor at Montclair State University. He currently resides in New York with his wife Brooke, CSU alumna, and their son, Connor.

Stefan Lawrence, B.A. '09 & M.Ed. '12
Young Alumni Award
Stefan Lawrence is the assistant principal at Aaron Cohn Middle School. Over the relatively short span of his career, he has received many accolades. In 2016, he was selected as Muscogee County's Teacher of the Year, in 2017 he was selected as a Muscogee County Educational Excellence Foundation Harvard Fellow, and most recently, he was a finalist for Georgia Teacher of the Year.

Thomas McKenna, B.S. '88
Excellence in Alumni Achievement
Thomas McKenna joined Aflac in 1993 and currently serves as the Senior Vice President and deputy general counsel of Legal. In this role, he manages and directs the operations of the Aflac U.S. Legal division. He has served on the advisory board for CSU's MPA program review and is a member of the State Bar of Georgia and the Association of Corporate Counsel.

Johannes M. Stosch, B.M. '97
Excellence in Alumni Achievement
Johannes M. Stosch continued his education after his time at CSU at some of the top universities for music, Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester and the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. He currently serves as the director of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach and the music director and conductor for the Holland Symphony Orchestra.

Ben Thames, B.B.A. '97
Alumni Service Award
Ben has served on the Alumni Association Board of Directors since 2011. His past positions include secretary, vice president, and currently as president. Ben dedicates much of his time advocating and cheering for Columbus State University. Professionally, Ben is an account executive for DDI Technology.

Cathy Fussell, M.Ed. '90
Alumni Service Award
In 2011 Cathy Fussell retired from a 28-year career teaching literature and composition, first at the high school level, then most recently at Columbus State University. During her time at CSU, she was the director of the McCullers Center and was instrumental to its continuation and success. She is a member of the Pasaquan Preservation Society and has been an ardent supporter of its revitalization over the years.

Kimberly McElveen
Faculty/Staff Appreciation Award
Dr. Kimberly McElveen is the assistant vice president of Institutional Assessment at Columbus State University. In this role, she partners with the Office of Alumni Engagement and the Alumni Association to complete various alumni assessments. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the association and it's aims and mission.
